Mobile Mapping System (MLS) applied to urban tree inventory

In urbanised Western Europe, trees are considered an important component of the built environment. This implies an increasing demand for tree inventories. Laser Mobile Mapping Systems (MLS) provide an efficient and accurate way to sample the surrounding 3D road, including adjacent trees. In this line of research a processing chain is proposed with a view to extract tree location and size from MLS data.

  • Tree parameter extraction

These steps, in combination with an optimised code, are expected to be sufficient to achieve the ultimate goal of automated tree parameter estimation at a speed that matches the acquisition speed and with a quality that equals the result obtained by a human operator.
