Experts of the university demanded today, in the “IV Foro Universidades TCUE” organized by “EL MUNDO/DIARIO DE VALLADOLID” greater two-way interaction between university and industry for the transfer of knowledge and technology.
This was the main premise that Yolanda Calvo, innovation director of the General Foundation of the University of Valladolid, exposed who stressed the importance which has led the Tcue program promoted by the “Junta de Castilla y León” in 2008. In this way, most of the speakers coming from the public universities of the community and Cartif, agreed on the importance of the link that should keep the two players to transfer knowledge to the business sector and the market.
To conclude the round table, Diego González-Aguilera, director of the “Department of Cartographic Engineering of the University of Salamanca, conducted a review of the various programs and software developed since 2005 by the team he led and that have been applied to contribute to aerospace industry, criminology or cultural heritage which has earned them several awards and recognitions. They have also evolved the field of drones and mobile phones, which has led to open many doors.
Diego González-Aguilera also exposed the practical case of the day explaining the story of how his doctora thesis became a project of huge dimensions and with many applications. This story began in 2002 at a company that developed GIS systems in Barcelona, where the current USAL professor worked at. This project born focused on historical heritage and with and international award that accompanied the interest of large companies like NADA, Jacobs and John Hopkins University.
As innovator they decided to honor his name and, shortly after, they performed the same project but with multiple images to also apply this technology to forensic scenarios, architecture and aerospace engineering evolving his technique until perform these reconstructions with a smartphone.
With this last research line they were awarded by Microsoft and became company. However, during this journey fraught with success, González-Aguilera also has encountered some obstacles. “The jump between the University and the company is very real”. However, there is the list of successes.
“The multidisciplinary approach is crucial because motivation is much higher. Behind all must have a team that supports” said the director of the Department of Cartographic Engineering of the University of Salamanca, main character of several reports of “Innovadores” supplement.
