Satellite imagery for the detection of irrigation activities


This line of research focuses on the use of high-resolution, open-access satellite data to identify agricultural plots with clear irrigation activity. Given that this type of data is periodic (temporal resolution of the satellite in question), it is not only possible to study the temporal evolution of irrigation, but also the phenological cycle of the vegetation cover and, in this way, draw conclusions about the type of crop on each agricultural plot. In this sense, satellite platforms such as Landsat 8 or Sentinel 2-A/B offer the possibility of downloading their data free of charge and within a few days of being acquired. This methodology is based on the correct combination of spectral bands to obtain false colour images that highlight the vegetation as well as on the calculation of NDVI, which shows graphically and for a series of temporal data the health and vigour of the crops. To correctly manage all this geospatial information, the use of GIS software is required as well as an organised spatial database capable of managing all the data involved in such analyses.
