Diego González and Benjamín Arias, recipients of the John I. Davidson President’s Award.

Diego González y Benjamín AriasThe professors of the University of Salamanca Diego González Aguilera and Benjamín Arias Pérez have been awarded the second international John I. Davidson President’s Prize that the prestigious scientific association American Society of Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (ASPRS) awards annually through its journal PERS among all published works. The award-winning research work, entitled “An Automatic Approach to UAV Flight Planning and Control for Photogrammetric Applications: a Test case in Asturias Region (Spain)”, addresses the development of software for the planning and control of flights of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). Specifically, the program generates the information for a UAV to automatically carry out a flight with the photogrammetric rigor necessary for precision cartographic applications, while also allowing control of the executed flight. The award aims to highlight the importance of this work in the current context, in which an important business model has been generated worldwide in the application of unmanned aerial systems in cartographic, civil, agricultural and forestry engineering. In the development of the study, the researchers from the University of Salamanca had the collaboration of David Hernández López and Beatriz Felipe García, from the University of Castilla La Mancha.
