With the financing of the provincial institution, the TIDOP research group of the Higher Polytechnic School of Ávila will carry out this job in four years and will serve to anticipate natural disasters in the area.
After the province of Ávila was one of the most affected by the fires last year and also suffered the consequences of the important flood of the end of August, the Deputation of Ávila and the University of Salamanca (USAL) have come together to create a predictive map of fires and floods for the 247 municipalities of the province as a way to anticipate these catastrophes.
Anticipation was precisely the key word used in the signing of the agreement between the two institutions that will serve to launch a four-year work to be carried out by the Tidop research group of the Superior Polytechnic School of Ávila with funding of 100.000 euros from the Diputación. The intention is to start with the part corresponding to fires and in critical areas.
The agreement was initialed by the president of the provincial institution, Carlos García, and the rector of the University of Salamanca, Ricardo Rivero. The details of the job were presented by Professor Diego González Aguilera, who also leads the TIDOP group, and who stressed that for the first time there will be a plan that serves to prevent issues of “enormous impact on society such as fires and floods” , demonstrating also how engineering works to solve people’s problems, something that must “hook students”.
